Optony and EcoShift Create Clean Energy Plan for Durham County, NC

Durham County made bold commitment to 100% clean energy for the County’s operations by 2050, with and interim goal of 80% by 2030. The plan will guide the transition from fossil fuel with the inclusive benefits of community resilience, job creation, and economic growth.

Officially adopted in 2022, Durham County’s full clean energy plan provides a roadmap to enable the county to achieve their sustainability goals through a combines of strategic policy and program design. Focused on developing local renewable energy systems and improving energy reliability and resilience, the County has been working to prioritize environmental and fiscal modeling.

Strategies of the County’s clean energy plan include:

  • Energy Efficiency: 20% reduction in energy use
  • Rooftop solar and large-scale solar adoption: Including participation in Duke Energy’s Green Source Advantage Program
  • Fleet Electrification and renewable diesel vehicles
  • Building Electrification: Switching natural gas boilers to and hot water to heat pumps at large facilities, plan new facilities to reduce natural gas usage
  • Fill The Gap: Advocacy for increased grid renewables through policy changes and engagement

Clean Energy Plan Expertise

Optony knows clean energy themes well, and is enthusiastic to bring clean energy strategies from many past projects in the California, Colorado, Nevada, and Virginia to our work in North Carolina. We’re also thrilled to continue working with EcoShift Consulting who was an Optony partner in the jobs and economics business plan for local clean energy development in Alameda County.

Optony’s experience has been delivering custom clean energy roadmaps for municipalities like Durham County for over a decade. A typical clean energy plan can include solar feasibility, cost modeling, and decarbonization strategies that boost resilience, enhance ESG, and reduce long-term utility costs — but can include a wide range of other strategies as well.
