Grid-Scale Energy Storage Valuation for City Palo Alto Utility, CA
To cost-effectively meet State of California requirements, utilities are beginning to add grid-scale energy storage to existing generation assets. Many of these assets include large solar photovoltaic projects, which could economically benefit from shifting excess midday production to more lucrative evening hours. In 2019, Optony was engaged by the City of Palo Alto Utilities to model energy storage systems at several existing and proposed PV plants, which would maximize financial benefit for the utility and their customers. Bidding strategies, optimization and statistical analyses were established using Optony’s in-house energy storage simulator.
